PACE - Professional and Continuing Education Programs

Distance Learning

The Distance Learning Program is jointly developed by the Department of Chemical Engineering, Curtin University of Technology and Alcoa World Alumina Ltd.

Who will benefit from the program

This program is aimed at technical and management personnel involved in the chemical and mineral processing industries including

Why you will benefit from the program?

The fundamental concept in chemical engineering and in the design of chemical, mineral and petroleum processing plant is that of unit operations. The unit operations consist of sequences of steps which make up the complex process present in both manufacturing and mineral process industries. The individual unit operations are each based on identifiable scientific principles which are translated into particular industrial applications in various processing schemes. A systematic study of the individual unit operations provides a unified and simplified background for the understanding of all processes.

The unit operations are applicable to many physical processes as well as chemical reaction systems. Therefore, the primary goal of this program is to provide a fundamental background in material and energy balances, mass and heat transfer operations, as well as equipment designs. Units will also be offered on fluid and particle mechanics, advanced separation process, process control and instrumentation based on the demand from industry needs.

Participants in the program will have opportunity to cover the details of unit operations in various segments of the program to complement/refresh their former professional training. Furthermore the distance learning mode will provide the participants a flexible learning opportunity without compromising their current job applications and commitments.

Degree Programs on Offer

Graduate certificate: 100 credit points (4 units) Postgraduate diploma: 200 credit points (8 units) Masters degree: 300 credit points (8 units plus 100 credit points of thesis)

Programs can be specifically designed to cater for the industry needs (this is what we are doing already)

Units on Offer

The following units are currently on-line

1.1 Heat Transfer (25 credits)

1.2 Mass and Energy Balances

We intend to develop the following units upon demand

The above units will contribute towards the Master of Chemical Engineering by Course Work

Each 25 credit unit will require at least 8 hours of study per week over a 12 week semester
