Research Centres

The department participates in three established Cooperative Research Centres:

Cooperative Research Centre for Coal in Sustainable Development (CCSD)

The overall research program of this Centre will be shaped by the Economic, Social and Environmental Assessment 'driver' program, which will focus on strategic options for coal in sustainable development, as defined by sustainability, scenario, risk and life cycle assessments. The technical research will be conducted in five programs: Current Power Generation, focused on pulverised coal-fired utility boilers, with major projects on emissions to air, coal characterisation, and improvement and development of boiler operations; Transitional Power Generation, covering entrained-flow gasification, fluidised bed combustion and advanced systems evaluation; Future Scenarios and Technologies, including portfolio options and risks, greenhouse gas reduction and barriers to coal utilisation technology change; Ironmaking in blast furnaces and by novel processes; and By-products and Waste, including waste management and utilisation components. The Department will play a major role in Current Power Generation and By-products and Waste area with two key projects.

A J Parker Cooperative Research Centre in Hydrometallurgy

The Engineering Program within the Parker Centre brings a new dimension to the strong scientific base developed over the first seven years. The program aims to develop tools and techniques to improve the economic performance of minerals processing plants. Currently the department has two projects with A J Parker Cemtre on chemical plant process flow sheeting: Nickel and Gold.

CRC CARE

CRC CARE is a Cooperative Research Centre for Contamination Assessment and Remediation of the Environment. CRC CARE creates and demonstrates advanced new technologies for dealing with land, groundwater and air contamination. The Chemical Engineering Department has three projects currently funded by CRC CARE.
